What is an Amiibo?

Amiibo are interactive figures and cards that you can pair with your games. You need to make sure that you have a compatible Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS or Wii U software to unlock a whole host of added features for your games. Amiibos have different effects depending on the game: you might unlock new weapons, character customisations or new game modes. You can even boost your amiibo’s abilities to turn it into your perfect companion – or a formidable foe if you’re up for a challenge.

Systems Compatible with Amiibo

• Nintendo Switch: You can pair your amiibos with a Nintendo Switch by tapping them on the NFC touchpoint on the right Joy-Con or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
• New Nintendo 3DS Systems: Amiibos are compatible with the New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL and New Nintendo 2DS XL by tapping them to the NFC area on the bottom screen.
• Wii U: The NFC touchpoint is located on the Wii U GamePad, simply tap your amiibo against this point and your amiibo will join your adventures.
• Reader/Writer: If you don’t have the new editions we mentioned above, you can purchase a separate NFC Reader/Writer to pair your amiibos to your Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL and Nintendo 2DS.

What’s The Difference Between Amiibo Figures and Cards?

Some amiibos are figures and some come in the form of cards. It doesn’t matter which version you have, both act in the same way and can do the exact same things. Many people enjoy collecting the figurines as accessories to spruce up their gaming setup. If you have a compatible amiibo, you can tap it while playing with a compatible console to power up your gameplay.

Amiibos give you the opportunity to access new content within your favourite games. There are more collectables on offer, new characters. For example, in Animal Crossing: New Leaf – if you tap a compatible amiibo, you can invite animals to your town to visit. You can even ask them to move it. These amiibos are perfect for die-hard fans of the game who want to ramp up their in-game experience ever so slightly. You can also change the look of in-game characters and expand your customisation options with themed costumes when using a compatible amiibo.

One amiibo can be used across multiple games, adding a whole new level of personalised fun to your favourite games.
